I've always thought it would be fun to blog. Why? Because I personally feel that I can be somewhat clever, and even if I'm not witty enough for you the events of my life are often humorous. There have been many days that I feel that I am a living sitcom. I do enjoy writing; I did major in English and Communications in college for the pure fact that I could spend most of my life reading and writing. And, after attempting to start a journal hundreds of times in my life, I have never been successful at keeping it up. However, if I know that you are eagerly awaiting my next post, then maybe my Catholic guilt will keep me writing on a regular basis.
Unfortunately, the first thing I needed to do was name the blog. That's a lot of pressure to ask someone right away. Titles must always be somewhat intriguing, but hint at what will be addressed. And since this blog will mostly be random musings, what will I write about is a hard to answer question. I'm assuming that some of these posts will be about my work in higher ed, others will be about my baby-on-the-way, many will involved my beloved family and friends, and, of course, there will be days of random diatribes. I always name my papers after they are complete, not before I begin them. How will I know that my title matches my topic?
So I decided to think about some of my favorite words and if they could work. "Plethora" would ask the question, "A plethora of what?" "Serendipity" just seemed too spontaneous and overly cheerful. I then began thinking of two of my favorite poetic terms, "synecdoche" and "metonymy," but I definitely was substituting something for the real thing (at least not all the time). Anyway, a quick googling let me into finding "vernacular," which is what this blog should end up being. You can expect to find everyday life and its intersection with my language skills. It will be made up of common occurrences expressed through my voice. Of course, from time to time, expect grammar mistakes, skipping of thought, and misused words. Correct me if you would like, but just remember that it's only written in my vernacular language.
Yay!! A blog! They can be fun and I'm sure you'll be much wittier and better about posting than I am :)
